It is a little limited but according the the webpage if you know Microsoft Access you can customise it.

If anyone knows about other free software for poultry farming and chicken farming please post some details for me. Thanks]]>

Layer and broilers are raised differently - and have different requiremnent - but generally ..

how much does each chicken eat ?

- about 180 grams of feed per day.

what is the bulk cost of the food ?

- depends where you are (delivery prices are variable) and from supplier to suppler. You also get different types of chicken food - for chicks (starter food, follower and geneneral feed), layer mash for growing layers (egg production) - a 50kg bag costs about R200. If you are bulk buying bags if chicken food make sure you have a rat proof store room. If you are bulk buying loose feed you will need a silo and some method to distribute the feed to the chicken house - this is the most cost effective wat to buy feed, and the best way to keep it away from rats etc. - but the silos cost quite a lot.

Do free range chickens require climate controlled coops?

- No - not unless you are in a very cold place - chickens, once grown are very hardy - baby chicks for broilers will need a heater until they get feathers. Climate controlled chicken coops or poultry houses are known as "closed enviroment houses" - and this means that they are sealed - no outside acces for the chickens - which means that they are not free range.

do free range chickens require boxes or similar to lay their eggs in?

- They will need nest boxes to lay the eggs into - the regulations in South AFrica state 5 hens per bay.

what is the mortality rate of the chickens?

- depends on how good a farmer you are - acceptable rates in bigger farms is about 3 percent (intensive farming) - Free range depends on many factors - they face more challenges like preditors, disease etc - usually about 5%

how much do point of lay chickens cost?

- about R50 depending on the breed and supplier - make sure that they have had all the inoculations and shots before you get them. And make sure that they have not been debeaked (intensive farming burns the beak so that they do not hurt each other in the lkayer cages - free range chickens may not be debeaked - and if they are they cannot range properly.

Why is it better to go for these than 1 day old chicks?

- If you get one day olds make sure you just get female chickes, you will need to do all the medication and innoculations, you will need heaters and fans, and you will have a higher mortality rate. Supplers of layers also follw (or should follow) a strict regime of fedd and types of feed to ensure the layer is in peak laying condition when you buy the hen.

how ethical is de-beaking in terms of free range / organic?

- You may not - and anyway - how are they supposed to peck and forage if they have no beak? (have a look at the free range regulations)

what % can one assume for egg laying i.e. 1 egg per day ? 6 per week per chicken?

- about 0.8 eggs per day over the entire laying period - (about 60 weeks) - in the beginning they lay few eggs, at peak can lay 1.2 eggs per chicken per day, and as they get older they lay less and less eggs.

What is the usefull life of a chicken in terms of egg production and what do you do with them after this "egg based usefull life"?

- 60 weeks - then you sell them for thir meat - many AFrica people like such chickens - they are known as "hard chickens" and you can expect about R22 - R30 per chicken.

what sort of labour is required?

-Depends on how many chickens you have, and what sort of feeding and drinking equipment you are using.

What is the best way to establish a market?

- You can try and get a contract from the larger growers - Rainbow, Early Bird etc. - they will control what and how you farm - equi[pment and methods. Find supermarkets like Spars in your areas - they aslo will need to inspect your farm. Sell directly to public - pererably small bakers and resturants.

what are (other than the obvious business plan) the criteria for government loans / grants e.g. am i required to be BEE compliant / have an empowerment vision?

- Dunno about this - contact www .seda.org.co.za]]>

You will need some kind of drinkers and feeders - while free range chickens will eat from the land they will still need chicken feed. If you have vegatables on your farm you can suppliment their meals with veggies - and vegetables also give you nice orange yolks - while plain feed does not. A flock of chickens will also quickly turn a small area of lush bush into a dust bowl - so they must have lots of space - or be prepared to move them from camp to camp.

You can fnd info on free range regulations at How to farm Free Range eggs

60 hens will give you about 55 eggs a day - have you got that many gym buddies?

Your structure should not be made of wood if you plan to use it for your next cycle of hens - the hens will lay for about a year and a bit, and then will slowly lay less and less - A wooden structure cannot be cleaned propery and will hold disease - rather build a steel structure.

This picture is a layer house with cages - but will do for free range layers - you would add free range flaps to one side and not use the cages. You could use a lower house - 2m at the edges, rather than this structure which has a 2.5m height at the wall edges (cages need height).]]>

I'm looking for anyone who know buyers in KZN who can engage in a contract with me as an emerging broiler grower, about 5000 broilers per month.

I have set up everything and I'm starting this business in May (which is when my start up capital will be available). This will assist me in financial planning and any other information on how can I succeed when starting small.

I have been knocking on most doors about funding and now I've decided to come up with capital and I've already started building a 30m X 6m broiler house and now waiting for release of my investment in May 2012.

Your assistance in this regard will be highly appreciated.

How many chickens do you want to farm with? Usually one will buy point of lay hens if you want to farm with eggs – point of lay means chickens that are about 18 weeks old.

You can see houses sizes and prices at:

Layer cages – layer cage prices only
Layer Houses – complete houses, sizes and prices
Broiler Houses – complete houses, sizes and prices

Grants or funding - your best bet is to approach government.
A good place to start is www .seda.org.za
You will need a business plan to get funding. – poultry business plans]]>

disease and eventually elliminate from our flock. It is generally introduced by
local bird life being too close to the hocks. There is also a cost ratio to think of as
the cleaning materials they recommend (virokill) can be very expensive.
Turn your sawdust around more often as well this will help to keep pathogens out of
your hocks
Try Imuno vet they are very helpful.

It is given in a powder from and mixed with their water - the really sick chicken still needs to be given water - 5 days afterwards - dunno if she will make it. DO NOT PLACE YOUNG BIRDS NEAR OLD BIRDS - and make sure your chicken house is properly cleaned and disinfected between placing new birds - Like an idiot I put 16 week old layers too close to 40 week old laying hens - even though the chicken coops were brand new - what an idiot. Any way people - put foot baths outside all your hounder hokke - otherwise your chickens may end up looking like mine - make sure your chickens have their vaccinations and if the get a sick chicken - act straight away. I actually saw one of the hens blowing small bubbles out of it's nose a week ago - and I did nothing - now there is a chance that all 200 of my hens will get this damn disease.]]>

Once the chicken has it, even when they are healed - they are carriers for life. Make sure you don't put young birds near older chickens. You can treat it with Sulphachloropyrazine Sodium - stuff is called ESB 3. You mix it with water and treat the hens for 3 - 6 days. If you have layers you cannot eat the eggs for 3 days after, and if they are broilers - 6 days after.]]> Broiler chicken farming Tue, 29 Nov 2011 03:03:20 +0000 Subject: Re: broiler medication program - by: chrisnkoro http://www.africanpoultryfarming.co.za/forum/4-broiler-chicken-farming/57-broiler-medication-program#126 http://www.africanpoultryfarming.co.za/forum/4-broiler-chicken-farming/57-broiler-medication-program#126 Broiler chicken farming Wed, 16 Nov 2011 13:52:52 +0000 Subject: where can i get buyers? - by: chrisnkoro http://www.africanpoultryfarming.co.za/forum/4-broiler-chicken-farming/125-where-can-i-get-buyers#125 http://www.africanpoultryfarming.co.za/forum/4-broiler-chicken-farming/125-where-can-i-get-buyers#125 I have undergone all the neccessary training on large scale poutry farming.even if its companies that can buy about 10000 per circle its ok.]]> Broiler chicken farming Wed, 16 Nov 2011 13:49:33 +0000 Subject: Re: Free Range Housing - by: samuelcosta732 http://www.africanpoultryfarming.co.za/forum/5-layer-houses-and-egg-farming/55-free-range-housing#124 http://www.africanpoultryfarming.co.za/forum/5-layer-houses-and-egg-farming/55-free-range-housing#124 Layer houses and egg farming Mon, 14 Nov 2011 21:33:27 +0000 Subject: Re: Free Range Housing - by: Mlungu http://www.africanpoultryfarming.co.za/forum/5-layer-houses-and-egg-farming/55-free-range-housing#65 http://www.africanpoultryfarming.co.za/forum/5-layer-houses-and-egg-farming/55-free-range-housing#65 free range regulations for South Africa - tells you how many chickens per square meter - in the poultry house and outside in the field - also remember that the point of lay hens cannot be debeaked. Am just wondering if it is not the big guns that want to close the production down of the smaller guys with Free Range Eggs. By reading what your wrote it is clear that you are very proud of your chickens and the humane way they are being held. Guess not everyone likes that.

Here in Namibia a couple of guys are trying to do free range. But basically only sell private. The one I know sells at Spar also had its problems. Even the colour of the eggs has been questioned.

So I guess there is quite something coming your way. Keep us updated!]]>

I have searched the internet for guidelines - the gov ones don't help, esp regarding guidelines for my egg packing room. I also have to put a best before or sell by or expiry date on my packaging - not a problem, but what is the best before period for an egg. I only supply eggs that are a week old, and on a weekly basis. I used to put a laid date on my packaging, but found consumers haven't a clue and were leaving my 5 day old eggs for a large commercial cage product with no date - who I know stock piles eggs, so I am very happy that this is now law. But, does one use the laid date, or the packed date - open for huge exploitation.

I am fully confident that I comply with the free-range regulations - in fact, my hens have about 5X the area required to free-range, I have camps that I rotate and plant rye-grass for them. I use a commercial free-range food (very expensive!) so no worries re the free-range certification.

Any other producers out there who can help?]]>

Same with the small and medium - most people, especially if they are guest houses etc. want large eggs - that's because all recipes work with a large size chicken eggs - if they use other size eggs in the recipes, especially in baking, the recipe does not work.

Keeping chickens at home brings all it's own hassles - 5 or 10 backyard chickens is no problem - but when you go kinda semi commercial you must have egg boxes, scales ... egg fridges, not to mention finding customers. Maybe I should find some uses for the eggs - add value - anyone got any ideas - what simple food can I make with eggs? I need something that will keep for a while - like nougat. Someone needs to start a recipe subject - any really good African recipes - traditional African recipes that use a lot of eggs?]]>
